The short answer: official ETS books are still the best GRE books. But if your math foundation is weak, books are usually not the best place to start.
This is the mistake a lot of GRE students make: they buy a bunch of books, jump into practice problems, and then wonder why their quant score barely moves. If you don’t understand the underlying math concepts, books can turn into an expensive way to feel busy.

Why “Best GRE Books” Is Often the Wrong Question
Students usually ask about books because books are easy to buy. But buying material and making progress are two different things.
If your foundations are already decent, books can be very useful. If your foundations are weak, especially in GRE math, books are often a clumsy way to learn. They can explain things, but they usually don’t teach as efficiently as a good platform with organized lessons, short videos, and a clear sequence.
That’s why I don’t think the real question is just “What are the best GRE books?” The better question is:
What should I use first, and what should I use later?
For many students, the right order is:
- Build foundation
- Learn strategy
- Do realistic official practice
- Review mistakes hard enough that they don’t repeat
Why Weak Quant Students Should Not Start With Books
If you’re weak in GRE math, the usual instinct is to buy a quant book and start grinding problems. I think that’s often backwards.
Practice problems are most useful when you already understand the underlying concepts. If you don’t, you end up doing something like this:
- miss a problem
- look at the explanation
- sort of understand it
- miss a similar problem later anyway
That is not a great learning system.
For building math foundation, I’d much rather see a student use a good GRE platform - especially GregMat - to learn concepts in a more structured way. GregMat is MUCH MUCH better suited to teaching math foundation than a stack of books is.
Once you’ve done that, official ETS books become much more valuable, because now you’re using them for what they’re best at: realistic GRE practice, not basic teaching.

Best overall official GRE books
1. Official GRE Super Power Pack
If you want the best core GRE books, this is the one bundle I’d want almost every student to have.
It gives you the three main official ETS books:
- The Official Guide to the GRE General Test
- Official GRE Verbal Reasoning Practice Questions
- Official GRE Quantitative Reasoning Practice Questions
These are the best GRE books because they contain official questions. But they are best used after you’ve built at least some foundation.

2. Official GRE Verbal Reasoning Practice Questions
For verbal, official questions matter a lot. ETS verbal logic is weird in its own very specific way, and third-party books often don’t capture it that well. If verbal is your main issue, this book is one of the best places to spend your time.
Best official GRE quant book
3. Official GRE Quantitative Reasoning Practice Questions
This is excellent official quant practice. But again: I do not think it’s the best place to learn math from scratch. I think it’s the best place to practice once you already know the concepts reasonably well.
Best free extra ETS practice
4. ETS Big Book
The Big Book is still useful as extra ETS practice, especially for verbal and for easier math.
I would not pay a crazy used-book price for a physical copy. But as a PDF, it gives you a lot of extra material. Like the official books above, it’s more valuable for practice than for teaching foundation.
Best third-party math drill book
5. Manhattan Prep 5 lb. Book of GRE Practice Problems
This is the third-party GRE book I’m most likely to recommend, but only in a limited role.
It’s good for math drilling and repetition. It is not, in my opinion, the answer to weak quant foundation by itself. If your math is shaky, learn the concepts on GregMat first, then use a book like this for targeted repetition.

What to Skip
- Don’t buy a pile of random third-party GRE books just because they exist.
- Don’t try to teach yourself weak quant foundations mainly through answer explanations.

- Don’t confuse “more practice” with “better preparation.”
- Don’t use books as a substitute for structure if your real problem is not knowing what to do first.
Most bad GRE prep is effort pointed in the wrong direction.
What I’d Buy
If your math foundation is weak
I would not start by buying more books. I would start with GregMat or another solid GRE platform that teaches the concepts well. After that, I’d add the Official GRE Super Power Pack.
If your foundation is decent
Buy the Official GRE Super Power Pack and use POWERPREP. That’s the cleanest and most efficient setup for many students.
If you want extra quant drilling
Add Manhattan 5 lb., but use it as a drill book, not your whole prep system.
If you want extra ETS practice
Use the Big Book PDF and POWERPREP after your foundation is in better shape.
