How SAT superscoring works

A superscore combines your best Reading and Writing score and your best Math score from all of your SAT test dates. Each section is scored from 200 to 800, so a superscore runs from 400 to 1600, like a single test.

College Board does not calculate a superscore. Superscoring is a college policy: a college that superscores builds it from the score reports you send, and a college that does not uses your scores from a single test date. Check the application requirements on each college's admissions website.

Sending your scores

  • By test date, not by section. You cannot send only the Math score from one day. Each date you send includes both sections.
  • Choose your dates. College Board's Score Choice lets you pick which test dates each college receives.
  • For a superscoring college, send every date that holds one of your best sections. The calculator tells you which dates those are.
  • Some colleges want every score. Some superscoring colleges ask for all test dates and still use your best sections.

Is another SAT worth it?

At a college that superscores, a retake can only help: if one section goes up, your superscore goes up, and a weaker section on the new date does not count. That makes a focused retake practical. Find the section with more room to grow in your SAT score checker results, put most of your prep there, and compare your superscore with the middle 50% SAT range at each college on your list. Our free 10-week SAT study plan lays out the weeks, and SAT and ACT score choice and superscoring covers the strategy in more detail. If you also have an ACT score, compare the two with our ACT to SAT converter.

Frequently asked questions

What is an SAT superscore?

Your highest Reading and Writing score plus your highest Math score, even if they come from different test dates. For example, 620 Reading and Writing from March and 650 Math from June make a 1270 superscore.

Does College Board calculate my SAT superscore?

No. Superscoring is a college policy. Colleges that superscore combine your best section scores themselves from the score reports you send.

Can I send only my best Math score from one test date?

No. SAT scores are sent by whole test date, so a college gets both sections from each date you choose. To get both of your best sections to a superscoring college, send each date that has one of them.

Do all colleges superscore the SAT?

No. Each college sets its own policy, usually in the application requirements on its admissions website. Some colleges that superscore ask you to send all of your scores.

Does a lower score on a retake hurt my SAT superscore?

Not at colleges that superscore: a superscore keeps your best score in each section, so it can only stay the same or go up. Colleges that ask for all scores will still see every test.

What is the highest SAT superscore?

1600, an 800 in each section.
