Why PSAT Prep Matters: Especially in California
The PSAT/NMSQT is administered each October to 10th and 11th graders. For 11th graders, the scores count toward National Merit Scholarship recognition, which colleges notice and which can come with scholarship money.
California is one of the most competitive states in the country for National Merit. The Semifinalist cutoff in California typically lands among the highest in the nation, meaning San Diego students need scores well above the national average to compete. Without specific preparation, even strong students leave points on the table, and with cutoffs this tight, a few points can decide whether a student is Commended or a Semifinalist.
The PSAT tests the same skills as the digital SAT (Reading, Writing, and Math), but it has its own scoring scale, pacing, and question patterns. Blake preps students for the PSAT's format specifically.
Blake's Approach to PSAT Tutoring
Blake teaches differently from most San Diego PSAT tutors. Most test prep focuses on how to answer a question. Blake teaches students what is actually being asked (how to read the test the way he does and spot the patterns that make students faster and more accurate). That matters a lot on a timed test like the PSAT, where pacing counts as much as content knowledge.
Every student gets a personalized plan based on a diagnostic assessment. Blake identifies where points are being lost, builds targeted strategies for each weak area, and assigns specific practice between sessions. Each week builds on the last.

Meet Blake Jensen: PSAT Tutor, San Diego
Blake: I'm a native San Diegan, father, and an aficionado of basketball, vintage video games, pitchy karaoke, and lecturing my son on how much better Star Wars was "back in the day." I played college basketball at St. Mary's College and Whittier College, where I earned my B.A. in Psychology in 2002.
I'm an SAT and ACT specialist, and in nearly 20 years as a full-time test prep coach I've guided students to top scores and National Merit recognition and seen just about every type of student and tutoring situation. As a former Division I college basketball player, I understand the pressure of high-stakes performance and what it takes to prepare for a test that matters.
I teach more than test-taking tricks: students learn to identify what each question actually requires and to spot the test's patterns, which makes them faster and more accurate under time pressure. For National Merit candidates, I know exactly where the California cutoff typically lands and what it takes to get there.
Blake meets students in person at our Carmel Valley location or online via Zoom.

PSAT Tutoring Reviews
Frequently Asked Questions: PSAT Tutoring in San Diego
What is the National Merit cutoff score in California?
California consistently has one of the highest National Merit Semifinalist cutoffs in the country, typically a Selection Index in the 220-223 range. Blake knows where the California cutoff tends to land and will tell your student exactly what score to target.
When should my student start PSAT prep?
The PSAT is administered in October. For 11th graders targeting National Merit, we recommend starting in late July or August, which allows 8-12 weeks of focused preparation before test day. 10th graders have more flexibility. Contact Blake for a free consultation and he'll recommend a timeline based on your student's current score.
Does Blake offer in-person PSAT tutoring in San Diego?
Yes. Blake meets students in person at our Carmel Valley office. He also tutors online via Zoom, and both formats work well.
How is PSAT prep different from SAT prep?
The PSAT and SAT test the same skills but the PSAT has its own scoring structure, timing, and question distribution. For National Merit candidates, prep also involves understanding the Selection Index scoring system and California's specific cutoff. Blake prepares students for the PSAT's format specifically.
What is the difference between National Merit Commended and Semifinalist?
Commended Students are in the top 3-4% nationally (below state Semifinalist cutoffs). Semifinalists are in the top ~1% in their state, using state-specific cutoffs. In California the Semifinalist cutoff is among the highest in the country. Blake can help your student understand which threshold is realistic and how to reach it.
How much does PSAT tutoring cost?
Packages start at $2,250 for 6 hours (Foundation), $4,200 for 12 hours (Momentum), and $8,700 for 24 hours (Premier). A single hour, without a package, is $380. Contact Blake for a free consultation to find the right fit.
