How ACT superscoring works
- Find your best English, Math, and Reading scores across all of your ACT test dates.
- Add them and divide by 3.
- Round to the nearest whole number. One-half or more rounds up.
Science is no longer part of the superscore, the same as the regular Composite since 2025. Before 2025 the superscore could include all four sections. Scores from older and current versions of the test both count, and ACT calculates your superscore automatically once you have tested more than once since September 2016.

Sending your superscore
- From MyACT. Choose your colleges and your superscore when you order score reports.
- What colleges receive. The full report from each test date that gave you a best section score, plus your highest Composite.
- Policies vary. Not every college superscores the ACT. Check each college's test score policy on its admissions website.
Is another ACT worth it?
At a college that superscores, a retake can only help, because a lower section on the new date does not replace your best one. In the class of 2026, students who retested raised their Composite by 1.1 points on average (ACT Profile Report 2026, National, page 13). Put most of your prep into the section with the most room to grow. Score a practice test with our ACT score calculator to see how many more correct answers each point takes, check where your superscore stands with the ACT score checker, and compare it with the middle 50% ACT range at each college on your list. If you also have an SAT score, compare the two with our ACT to SAT converter, and read SAT and ACT score choice and superscoring for strategy.

Frequently asked questions
What is an ACT superscore?
The average of your best English, Math, and Reading scores across all of your ACT test dates, rounded to the nearest whole number. For example, English 32 from April 2024, Math 28 from September 2024, and Reading 30 from April 2025 make a 30.
Does ACT calculate my superscore for me?
Yes. Once you have taken the ACT more than once since September 2016, ACT combines your best section scores into a superscore automatically. You choose it when you send scores from your MyACT account.
Does Science count toward the ACT superscore?
No. The superscore now uses only English, Math, and Reading. Before 2025 it could include Science. Science still combines with Math for your STEM score.
Do my ACT scores from before 2025 count?
Yes. ACT says scores from older and current versions of the test both count, and your superscore uses your highest score in each section no matter when you earned it.
What do colleges see when I send an ACT superscore?
The full score report from each test date that gave you a best section score, plus your highest Composite.
Do all colleges superscore the ACT?
No, though ACT says the number is growing. Check the test score policy on each college's admissions website. A college that does not superscore can still review the scores in your report.
How much do students improve on an ACT retake?
In the class of 2026, students who tested more than once raised their Composite by 1.1 points on average, from 20.7 on their first test to 21.8 on their most recent.
