What to look for in a GRE tutor

  • The GRE is their main subject. On tutoring marketplaces, many GRE tutors also teach calculus, chemistry, and the SAT. A GRE specialist has seen far more GRE questions and far more GRE students.
  • Full-time, with years of GRE experience. Ask how long they've tutored the GRE and whether it's their job or a side gig.
  • Their own GRE scores. A high score doesn't make someone a good teacher, but you want a tutor who has done what you're trying to do.
  • Results you can check. Reviews on Google, or another site the tutor doesn't control, tell you more than quotes on the tutor's own page.
  • A plan, not just help with questions. Most of your progress happens between sessions, so a good tutor tells you what to do each week.
  • Who you'll work with. At the big companies, you're matched with a tutor. Ask who it will be before you pay.

The options, one by one

1. Vince Kotchian Test Prep

We're a small GRE tutoring company: Vince Kotchian and Blake Jensen. You choose who you work with, and you talk with that person before you start.

  • Vince: 170 Verbal and 167 Quant on the GRE, and a full-time test prep tutor since 2007. Co-author of Barron's 6 GRE Practice Tests, creator of LinkedIn Learning's GRE prep course, a teacher for GregMat+, and a moderator of the GRE subreddit. $295/hour or $2,700 for 10 hours.
  • Blake: a full-time test prep coach for nearly 20 years. Meets online or in person in San Diego (see San Diego GRE tutors compared). $275/hour, or $248/hour for 10 or more hours.
  • Every student gets a study plan and homework built for them.
  • We specialize in MBA and JD applicants aiming for 320+.
  • Free 15-minute consultation. No score guarantee.

Some of our students' results, from their Google reviews: 337 on the GRE after mid-320s practice scores (Stu G.), 169 Verbal and 164 Quant on a first official GRE (Hank H.), and a perfect 170 Verbal, up from 155 (Shajan K.). See more results and meet the tutors.

If you'd rather study on your own with a plan from Vince, the Personalized GRE Study Plan is $495.

2. Manhattan Prep

Tutoring packages start at $2,900 for 10 hours and include Manhattan Prep's GRE for MBA Live Online course. It guarantees a 325+ or a 10+ point increase, depending on your baseline exam, if you do the recommended work. Conditions apply.

3. Kaplan

Standard tutoring starts at $2,499 and Premium at $3,500, with packages from 10 to 40 hours. Both include Kaplan's GRE Live Online course. Kaplan selects your tutor after an evaluation. Only Premium comes with Kaplan's 325+ or 10+ point guarantee. Conditions apply.

4. The Princeton Review

Packages are 10 hours ($180/hour), 18 hours ($167/hour), or 32 hours ($156/hour). Only the 32-hour "GRE 165+ Tutoring" package has a score guarantee: 165+ or a 5-point increase on Quant and Verbal, depending on your starting score, or a full or partial refund.

5. Wyzant

Wyzant is a marketplace, not a tutoring company. It lists more than 1,000 GRE tutors who set their own rates, and the top-listed ones charge $78 to $300 an hour. Many also teach other subjects, so check each tutor's GRE experience and look for reviews from GRE students.

6. GregMat

GregMat+ is a GRE prep subscription that starts at $11.99 a month and includes live classes and study plans. Subscribers can book one-on-one sessions with GregMat's tutors for $50 an hour. Full disclosure: Vince teaches for GregMat+.

Which one should you choose?

  • Tight budget: GregMat+, plus a few one-on-one sessions if you get stuck.
  • You want a score guarantee: Manhattan Prep, Kaplan Premium, or Princeton Review's 32-hour package, each with conditions.
  • You want to choose from hundreds of individual tutors: Wyzant, if you have time to vet them.
  • You want a GRE specialist who builds your whole plan and works with you directly: us, especially if you're applying to MBA or JD programs and need 320+.
