What to look for in a TOEFL tutor

  • They teach the current test. TOEFL updated the iBT in January 2026, with new Speaking and Listening tasks and a 1 to 6 score scale. Older advice and materials don't match what you'll see on test day.
  • Feedback on how you sound. Speaking is scored partly on how easy you are to understand. A tutor trained in pronunciation can hear the few sounds and patterns that cost you points.
  • Recorded practice. Hearing your own answers, with notes on what to fix, is faster than more general conversation practice.
  • Your target score. If you need a Speaking score for a license or a program, tell the tutor the number and the deadline at the start.
  • Who you'll work with. On large platforms there are thousands of tutors. Check each one's TOEFL experience and reviews from TOEFL students.
